Response #2

"For Artists, ‘self’ knowledge is sometimes discovered through the process of creating art. For other artists, establishing ‘self’ is a prerequisite for creation.”

I think a sense of yourself is required to create meaningful art. That doesn't mean, however, that you have to be crazy or weird. Everyone knows there were and still are many "outrageous" artists. Some well known examples of these artists would be Salvador Dali, Leonardo Devinci, and Van Gogh. This also leads to the question of what really is normal and what is "strange". I think as artists we are all a little strange in our own ways. It helps us create and discover a style for our art that can be distinguished from other artists. So I think we must have a grip on our true selfs before we begin making our art, but it gets fully developed and evolves while we are in the process of art. As artists, we are constantly changing, learning, growing, and discovering new ideas and beliefs about ourselves and the world around us.
